Carbon Dioxide Fire Extinguisher

The CO2 fire extinguisher, distinguished by its red body with a black band, is primarily effective against Class B (flammable liquids) and Class E (electrical equipment) fires. This article delves into its optimal selection and application, highlighting its specific use cases.

Designed for durability and ease of use, the Firewize CO2 Carbon Dioxide fire extinguishers provide a residue-free solution for extinguishing electrical fires with additional limited performance for Class A, flammable material and Class B, flammable liquid fires.

Available in multiple sizes to suit various needs, these extinguishers feature lightweight aluminium bodies, corrosion-resistant components, and precision-directed hoses, ensuring fast, effective fire suppression in sensitive environments.

Carbon Dioxide CO2 Fire Extinguisher Selection Guide Australia - Class A, Class B, Class E

Selecting the right capacity CO2 fire extinguisher is crucial for ensuring optimal fire safety in your premises. CO2 extinguishers are preferred for their ability to suppress fires involving flammable liquids and electrical equipment without leaving any residue, making them ideal for sensitive environments. Here's a guide to help you choose the correct capacity based on your specific needs:

Assess the Risk Level and Space Size

  • Low-Risk Areas (e.g., small electrical switchboards, small offices, server rooms): For spaces with a lower risk of fire or smaller areas, a 2.0kg CO2 extinguisher might be sufficient. Its compact size and lighter weight make it easy to handle and ideal for quick responses in confined spaces.
  • Medium-Risk Areas (e.g., larger offices, medical centres): Areas of medium size or risk, where a fire could potentially spread more widely or involve larger electrical equipment, would be better served by a 3.5kg CO2 extinguisher. This size provides a balance between capacity and manageability, offering more extinguishing agent without being too cumbersome to operate.
  • High-Risk Areas (e.g., industrial settings, large computer rooms): In environments where the potential for larger fires exists or where there are more significant quantities of flammable liquids and electrical hazards, the 5.0kg CO2 extinguisher is recommended. Its larger capacity ensures that you have enough extinguishing agent to handle more substantial fires.

Location, Accessibility & Visibility

  • Location: Where possible, fire extinguishers should be located in a normal path of travel and near exits. According to Australian Standard AS 2444-1995 extinguishers with a Class E rating (like the Carbon Dioxide fire extinguisher), they should be mounted between 2 and 20m of electrical or electronic equipment that is required to be protected.
  • Accessibility: Ensure extinguishers are readily accessible and not obstructed. They shall be located in a conspicuous and readily accessible location, and not in a location where access to the fire extinguisher could pose a risk to a user.
  • Visibility: All extinguishers should be distinctly visible and marked with appropriate signage, regardless of size so that they can be readily found or seen in the event of an emergency.

Installation

Fire Extinguisher Mounting Heights

To securely mount a fire extinguisher without causing damage to a wall, particularly those made of plaster which are more prone to damage, it is crucial to begin by identifying a wall stud or another robust anchoring point within the wall. This initial step is essential because wall studs provide the necessary support and stability to bear the weight of the fire extinguisher, thereby preventing the mounting hardware from pulling out under the weight and damaging the plaster.

Australian Standard AS 2444 sets out the requirements for the mounting height for a portable fire extinguisher. The Standard also requires a location sign to be prominently mounted above the fire extinguisher, as shown on the illustration.

Extinguisher Mounting Heights

  • Minimum mounting height (from the underside of the fire extinguisher): 100mm from floor level.
  • Maximum mounting height (from the top of the fire extinguisher): 1200mm from floor level.

Location Sign Mounting Height

A location sign shall be provided above or adjacent to an extinguisher and a single sign may be employed to indicate the presence of multiple extinguishers grouped together at one location, evene where those extinguishers are of different types.

  • Minimum mounting height of the location sign (to the underside of the sign): 2000mm from floor level.

In certain circumstances, it may be beneficial to mount the fire extinguisher within a suitable cabinet or enclosure. Where an enclosure is used, there are specific requirements in AS 2444 to ensure the enclosure (1) does not adversely affect or encroach on the path of travel to a required exit and that the cabinet is clearly marked with the words "FIRE EXTINGUISHER" in letters at least 32mm high.

Maintenance

Fire Extinguisher Service - Carbon Dioxide

Section 10 of Australian Standard AS 1851 sets out the routine servicing and maintenance requirements for portable fire extinguishers. The Standard states that all portable fire extinguishers shall be inspected every six-months by a competent person. As party of this inspection the Standard lists 21 seperate checks (although only 14 of these checks apply to Carbon Dioxide portable fire extinguishers).

In addition to the six-monthly routine inspection activities, the Standard also prescribes additional (yearly) inspections to ensure that the fire extinguisher is still correct and suitable for the fire hazard for which the fire extinguisher is intended, and that there are no obstructions that could adversely affect access to the fire extinguisher in the event of an emergency.

In some applications the environment where the extinguisher is stored may be considered aggressive that may require additional or more frequent inspections.

Fire Extinguisher Use (Animation) | Firewize

Most fires, in the early (incipient) stage, can be extinguished easily with a portable fire extinguisher, and if used correctly.  A Carbon Dioxide (CO2) fire extinguisher is ideally suited for electrical or electronic fires, but may have limited application for Class A such as flammable (carbonaceous) materials and small flammable liquid fires.

Operate the extinguisher from a safe distance, and then move towards the fire once it starts to diminish. Be sure to read the instructions on the fire extinguisher, different fire extinguishers recommend operating them using different methods and safe distances from the fire.

To use a Carbon Dioxide fire extinguisher use the acronym (PASS) as a quick reference;

  1. Pull the Pin at the top of the extinguisher.
The pin releases a locking mechanism and will allow you to discharge the extinguisher.
  2. Aim at the base of the fire, not the flames.
This is important - in order to put out the fire, you must aim the extinguisher at the base of the fuel source, not the flames.
  3. Squeeze the lever slowly.
This will release the extinguishing agent in the extinguisher. If the handle is released, the discharge will stop.
  4. Sweep from side to side.
Using a sweeping motion, move the fire extinguisher back and forth until the fire is completely out, do not stop, even if you suspect the fire has stopped.
How to use a Fire Extinguisher

What do you do if you have used your fire extinguisher?

Once a portable fire extinguisher has been used, it must be either replaced or refilled.  Replacing or refilling depends largely on the type of fire extinguisher.  For Carbon Dioxide fire extinguishers, they should be returned to Firewize and they can be inspected and if appropriate refilled, so that they may be used again.

Even if the Carbon Dioxide fire extinguisher has only been partially used, it is vital that it be inspected and refilled.

Firewize operates a changeover service (much like your household BBQ gas bottle) during our weekly Fire Extinguisher Service Clinics where you can return your fire extinguisher to Firewize where it can be replaced1 with another fire extinguisher of the same capacity and performance rating.
