Designed for durability and ease of use, the Firewize CO2 Carbon Dioxide fire extinguishers provide a residue-free solution for extinguishing electrical fires with additional limited performance for Class A, flammable material and Class B, flammable liquid fires.
Available in multiple sizes to suit various needs, these extinguishers feature lightweight aluminium bodies, corrosion-resistant components, and precision-directed hoses, ensuring fast, effective fire suppression in sensitive environments.
Selecting the right capacity CO2 fire extinguisher is crucial for ensuring optimal fire safety in your premises. CO2 extinguishers are preferred for their ability to suppress fires involving flammable liquids and electrical equipment without leaving any residue, making them ideal for sensitive environments. Here's a guide to help you choose the correct capacity based on your specific needs:
To securely mount a fire extinguisher without causing damage to a wall, particularly those made of plaster which are more prone to damage, it is crucial to begin by identifying a wall stud or another robust anchoring point within the wall. This initial step is essential because wall studs provide the necessary support and stability to bear the weight of the fire extinguisher, thereby preventing the mounting hardware from pulling out under the weight and damaging the plaster.
Australian Standard AS 2444 sets out the requirements for the mounting height for a portable fire extinguisher. The Standard also requires a location sign to be prominently mounted above the fire extinguisher, as shown on the illustration.
Extinguisher Mounting Heights
Location Sign Mounting Height
A location sign shall be provided above or adjacent to an extinguisher and a single sign may be employed to indicate the presence of multiple extinguishers grouped together at one location, evene where those extinguishers are of different types.
In certain circumstances, it may be beneficial to mount the fire extinguisher within a suitable cabinet or enclosure. Where an enclosure is used, there are specific requirements in AS 2444 to ensure the enclosure (1) does not adversely affect or encroach on the path of travel to a required exit and that the cabinet is clearly marked with the words "FIRE EXTINGUISHER" in letters at least 32mm high.
Section 10 of Australian Standard AS 1851 sets out the routine servicing and maintenance requirements for portable fire extinguishers. The Standard states that all portable fire extinguishers shall be inspected every six-months by a competent person. As party of this inspection the Standard lists 21 seperate checks (although only 14 of these checks apply to Carbon Dioxide portable fire extinguishers).
In addition to the six-monthly routine inspection activities, the Standard also prescribes additional (yearly) inspections to ensure that the fire extinguisher is still correct and suitable for the fire hazard for which the fire extinguisher is intended, and that there are no obstructions that could adversely affect access to the fire extinguisher in the event of an emergency.
In some applications the environment where the extinguisher is stored may be considered aggressive that may require additional or more frequent inspections.
Most fires, in the early (incipient) stage, can be extinguished easily with a portable fire extinguisher, and if used correctly. A Carbon Dioxide (CO2) fire extinguisher is ideally suited for electrical or electronic fires, but may have limited application for Class A such as flammable (carbonaceous) materials and small flammable liquid fires.
Operate the extinguisher from a safe distance, and then move towards the fire once it starts to diminish. Be sure to read the instructions on the fire extinguisher, different fire extinguishers recommend operating them using different methods and safe distances from the fire.
To use a Carbon Dioxide fire extinguisher use the acronym (PASS) as a quick reference;
Once a portable fire extinguisher has been used, it must be either replaced or refilled. Replacing or refilling depends largely on the type of fire extinguisher. For Carbon Dioxide fire extinguishers, they should be returned to Firewize and they can be inspected and if appropriate refilled, so that they may be used again.
Even if the Carbon Dioxide fire extinguisher has only been partially used, it is vital that it be inspected and refilled.
Firewize operates a changeover service (much like your household BBQ gas bottle) during our weekly Fire Extinguisher Service Clinics where you can return your fire extinguisher to Firewize where it can be replaced1 with another fire extinguisher of the same capacity and performance rating.
