First Responder

First Responder

A first responder in the context of building fire safety generally refers to the primary operational personnel from a statutory emergency services organisation, generally the local attending fire brigade, who are the first to arrive at a facility following an automated alarm transmission or emergency callout.

Emergency services personnel assume immediate statutory command of the incident site, executing search and rescue, life safety interventions, and fire fighting operations within the building or structure.

Unlike internal building personnel, such as Chief Wardens or members of a facility’s Emergency Control Organisation (ECO) operating under Australian AS 3745, a fire brigade first responder has specific legal authority, specialised personal protective equipment (PPE), and tactical control over active and passive fire systems during an emergency.
