Introduction

A fire sprinkler fitting apprenticeship is a learning pathway that combines paid on-the-job training and formal study with a Registered Training Organisation ("RTO") and is a great way to gain a nationally recognised qualification, a Certificate III in Fire Protection.

A fire sprinkler fitter is responsible for installing, maintaining, surveying, testing and repairing an automatic fire sprinkler system, fire hydrant system, fire hose reel system and associated systems and equipment.

The apprenticeship to become a qualified (registered) fire sprinkler fitter takes 4 years to complete and includes a combination of on the job training and skills development with a registered training organisation.

This career will suit you if you like physical work, a high attention to detail, problem solving, getting a little dirty on the job, good with drawings and working in a team.

Job Details

There are 37 units of competency that comprise 31 core units 6 elective units necessary to complete your apprenticeship. Once complete, including the on-the-job training you will also need to apply for Registration with the Victorian Building Authority. This required a four year commitment from each apprentice.

Skills & Experience

Shortlisted applications must have successfully completed each of the following;

  • Successful completion of Year 12 or a minimum of 2 years workplace experience;
  • Construction induction training (white card);
  • Certificate II in Plumbing (Pre-apprenticeship).

We also look very favourably on candidates who have other relevant experience or a hobby that is aligned with the apprenticeship.

Duties

As an apprentice fire sprinkler sitter with Firewize you will be learning your trade under the direct supervision and experience of a registered fire sprinkler fitter. Your duties will evolve over time as you are exposed to new tasks, however early on, you will spend much of your time learning about safety and the language of our industry.

Safety is a critical element of your career with Firewize and will form part of your initial learning and includes the following;

  • the importance of job safety for yourself and others;
  • how to select and correctly use personal protective equipment;
  • what is a hazardous substance;
  • what is a material safety data sheet;
  • how to conduct a job hazard analysis;
  • how to write and implement a safe work method statement.

As your experience and knowledge grows, you will assist the a registered fire sprinkler fitter selecting and installing parts, fittings, pipes, valves, gauges, flow switches, pressure switches and sprinkler heads and related parts. During your apprenticeship you will learn why we install fire safety systems in buildings by learning about and understanding the following;

  • identification of a building classification based on its use;
  • the importance of when a fire system was installed and its approved design;
  • how to read and interpret plans, drawings & specifications;
  • how to read and apply the Building Code of Australia;
  • how to read and apply a Fire Engineering Report;
  • how to read and apply a product specification.

There is a lot to learn and we expect exceptional results from each of our apprentices.

Work Location

Our office is based in Notting Hill however you will be working on site in the Melbourne metropolitan area starting work between 6:30am and 7:30am most days for an 8 hour work day.
