Water Supply Flow test

In Australia, a fire sprinkler water supply flow test ensures system effectiveness by verifying water supply capacity, assessing system performance, ensuring compliance with standards, identifying deterioration, documenting system performance, and verifying modifications. This ensures fire protection systems remain reliable, effective, and compliant with Australian regulations.

In fire safety in Australia, a fire sprinkler water supply flow test serves several critical purposes to ensure the effectiveness and reliability of fire sprinkler systems in a demand situation. The primary objectives of a water supply flow test are as follows:

  1. Verification of Water Supply Capacity
The water supply flow test verifies that the water supply can deliver the required flow rate and pressure needed to operate the sprinkler system (or combined fire sprinkler & hydrant system) effectively in the event of a fire. This ensures that the system can provide sufficient water to control or extinguish a fire.

  2. System Performance Assessment:
It assesses the performance of the entire sprinkler system, including pipes, valves, and heads. This helps identify any potential issues, such as partially closed water supply valves, blockages, leaks, or other conditions, that could adversely affect the water supply in the event of a fire.

  3. Compliance with Standards & Insurance Requirements: The test ensures that the fire sprinkler system complies with relevant Australian standards, such as the commissioning requirements of AS 2118 (Automatic fire sprinkler systems) and ongoing maintenance and performance requirements of AS 1851 (Routine service of fire protection systems and equipment).

  4. Identification of Deterioration: Over time, components of the sprinkler system water supply such as valves, pipes, pumps, etc may deteriorate due to normal use, corrosion, sediment build-up, or other factors. Regular flow tests help identify these issues early and track the gradual changes over time, allowing for timely maintenance, repairs and capital replacement or upgrades to ensure the the system is operating according to its approved design and optimal condition.

  5. Documentation and Records: Conducting and documenting flow tests provide a record of system performance and maintenance activities. This documentation is essential for compliance, audits, insurance purposes, and demonstrating compliance with the relevant insurance, legislation and statutory obligations of building owners and occupiers.

  6. Verification of Modifications: If any modifications, repairs or changes in the water supply (including water supply pressure and flow rate changes from the water supply authority) have been made, a flow test verifies that these changes have not negatively impacted the system's performance. It ensures that the system still meets the required performance requirements of the approved design.

By conducting regular water supply flow tests for a fire sprinkler system, combined sprinkler / hydrant system, fire hydrant system or fire hose reel system, building owners and managers can ensure that their fire protection systems are reliable, effective, and compliant with Australian relevant requirements of the National Construction Code and Australian Standards.
