Warning system use for non-emergency purposes

A warning system (emergency warning system or building occupant warning system) may be used for non-emergency purposes such as public address and background music. In this circumstance, there are criteria set out in Clause 4.12 of AS 1670.4 that are necessary to override these features and ensure the warning system will continue to safeguard occupants from injury by being made aware of an emergency.

When an Emergency Warning System (EWS) is used for non-emergency purposes such as public address or background music, the following requirements as described in Clause 4.12 of Australian Standard AS 1670.4 apply:

  • The EWCIE must be designed to override these functions during an emergency warning or when the main power source is unavailable.
  • The power supply equipment (including batteries) must provide sufficient current to support both emergency and additional non-emergency loads.
  • The system's integrity must remain intact.
  • Continuous fault monitoring and indication functions must be maintained at all times.

Although AS 1670.1 does not explicitly outline requirements for a building occupant warning system that include non-emergency features like public address or background music, it is reasonable to assume that the provisions of Clause 4.12 should apply.
