The National Construction Code (NCC) sets out the objective, functional statement and requirements to safeguard occupants from injury by being made aware of the emergency by; (1) warning occupants to evacuate; and (2) managing the evacuation process in a building.
In general terms, Australian Standard AS 1670.1 covers the design and installation of a building occupant warning system in certain building classifications, while AS 1670.4 covers emergency warning and intercom systems in buildings.
To ensure the safety of building occupants, Clause 4.11 of Australian Standard AS 1670.4 specifies requirements for competing sound systems or sound reinforcement systems producing an average sound pressure level (SPL) above 75 dB(A) within the same emergency zone.
In such cases, the emergency warning signal must override and shut down all other sound systems in that zone.
While AS 1670.1 does not explicitly address building occupant warning systems with competing sound systems, it is reasonable to apply the provisions of Clause 4.11 in these scenarios.
