- Visibility
Visibility, in the context of luminance and emergency evacuation, refers to the ability of occupants to clearly perceive critical elements such as exit signs, pathways and obstacles, in an emergency.
Adequate visibility during an emergency can be affected by factors such as smoke, ambient lighting levels, and the availability of emergency lighting systems.
To assist the safe evacuation of a building in an emergency, visibility is ensured through the use and application of:
- Emergency Lighting Systems: Providing adequate illumination, especially in corridors, stairwells, and exit routes, to maintain clear visibility even when the main power fails.
- Luminance of Exit Signs: Ensuring exit signs are highly visible through proper luminance and contrast ratios, making them easily identifiable even in low visibility conditions like smoke-filled environments.
- Contrasting Colours: Effective use of contrasting colours and materials helps highlight exits, pathways, and safety features under reduced visibility.
- Smoke Management: Maintaining a smoke-free environment in escape routes or stairwells can greatly improve visibility, as smoke can severely diminish the luminance of emergency signs and lighting.
