Transport Time

Transport Time

Transport time is the duration, measured in seconds for a smoke sample to travel from the absolute furthest (most disadvantaged) sampling point of each branch in an aspirating smoke detector (ASD) pipe network to the sensing chamber inside the main detector unit.

First introduced in 2015  in Australian Standard AS 1670.1. Each subsequent edition of the Standard continues to include the requirement for transport time depending on the Sensitivity Class of the protected space.

The Aspirating Smoke Detector (ASD) transport time shall be determined by the design tool provided by the manufacturer ensuring this meets the apprpriate Class. The transport time shall be verified at the time of commissioning. The maximum permissable transport times are –

  1. Class A: 60 s
  2. Class B: 90 s; and
  3. Class C:  120 s.
