- Supplementary Fire Safety Statement ("SFSS")
A Supplementary Fire Safety Statement (SFSS) in New South Wales is a declaration required under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Regulation 2021 by or on behalf of a building owner that an accredited fire safety practitioner has assessed, inspected and verified the performance of each critical fire safety measure that applies to the building.
The intervals for when supplementary fire safety statements must be issued for each critical fire safety measure is listed in the fire safety schedule.
Critical fire safety measures that need to be maintained or assessed on a more regular basis to ensure ongoing compliance and functionality, such as:
- Sprinkler systems;
- Fire detection and alarm systems;
- Smoke control systems.
The SFSS confirms that these specific measures:
- Have been assessed by an accredited practitioner (fire safety);
- Are capable of performing to the standard required by the building’s fire safety schedule;
- Are properly maintained to ensure continued compliance.
Unlike the Annual Fire Safety Statement, the SFSS is submitted at intervals prescribed in the fire safety schedule, which could be more frequently as otherwise specified. The SFSS ensures that critical fire safety measures are continually monitored and verified for performance between annual assessments.
