Smoke Alarm System ("SAS")

Smoke Alarm System ("SAS")

A smoke alarm system1 (SAS) is a type of fire detection system (which senses heat, smoke, or both) made up of self-contained smoke alarms. Connected to the main electricity supply, these units comply with Australian Standard AS 3786 to detect fire products and emit an audible warning to alert occupants directly within the immediate space. A smoke alarm system relies on standalone or interconnected local warning units where the sensing element and alarm sounder are contained within the same housing.

By contrast, a smoke detection system is designed to Australian Standard AS 1670.1 that uses centralised Control and Indicating Equipment (CIE) to process signals from individual fire detectors throughout the building to activate secondary control functions, such as a building occupant warning system.
