Return Air Detector ("RAD")

A return-air detector ("RAD") or return-air smoke detector is a smoke detector mounted in the path of return air, either within a duct or plenum (including a ceiling cavity) forming part of the zone smoke control system in fire mode. The location of a return-air detector shall be mounted taking into consideration the flow of smoke and dilution. The requirements and use of a return air detector is covered by Australian Standards AS 1668 and AS 1670.
