Portable Fire Extinguisher (Aerosol Type)

A portable fire extinguisher (aerosol type), also called a portable aerosol fire extinguisher, is a stored-pressure device designed primarily for household or light-duty use. It contains a liquid, gas, or chemical extinguishing agent combined with a propellant. These extinguishers are hand-held, lightweight, typically red in colour, non-refillable, and must be discarded after any use. Operation involves pressing a trigger or nozzle to discharge and direct the agent at the base of a small fire.

According to the Trades Practices Act 1974, Consumer Protection Notice No. 9 of 20041, an Aerosol type portable fire extinguishers are must comply with Australian Standard AS/NZS 4353:1995 — Portable fire extinguishers - Aerosol type and prescribes requirements for the design, construction, labelling and performance of portable aerosol fire extinguishers.

In contrsast a portable fire extinguisher (non-aerosol type) is a more durable and serviceable appliance intended for broader applications, including domestic, commercial, and industrial use, and manufactured in accordance with the AS/NZS 1841.1 Australian / New Zealand  series of Standards.
