Noise

The term noise refers to any unwanted or disruptive sound that interferes with the clarity or quality of desired signals, such as speech or music.

Noise is broadly classified as a physical or acoustic disturbance that can originate from various sources, including environmental factors (e.g., traffic, machinery, or weather), electronic systems (e.g., electrical interference), or human activity.

In acoustics and communication systems, noise reduces the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), making it harder to distinguish the intended message from the background sound.

Depending on its nature, noise can be continuous (like a hum) or transient (like a sudden bang). Managing noise is critical in settings like public address systems, workplaces, or residential areas to ensure effective communication and a comfortable acoustic environment.
