Ignition Source

Ignition Source

In fire safety, an ignition source is any heat, spark, flame or chemical reaction that can ignite a material or substance, causing it to catch fire.

Common ignition sources include;

  • open flames;
  • electrical equipment;
  • hot surfaces;
  • sparks from welding or grinding;
  • static electricity;
  • exothermic chemical reactions;
  • chemical reactions that involve substances that are highly reactive or unstable.

Spontaneous combustion can be considered a type of ignition source because it generates the heat necessary to ignite materials without any external heat, flame, or spark.
