Articulation Index ("AI")

The Articulation Index (AI) is a standardised metric used to evaluate speech intelligibility in communication systems by quantifying the proportion of speech information that is audible and understandable to a listener.

The articulation index considers factors such as background noise, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and bandwidth limitations to determine how effectively a system transmits speech sounds.

The Articulation Index scale ranges from 0 (no intelligibility) to 1 (perfect intelligibility), with higher scores indicating better speech clarity. It divides the speech frequency range into bands, assigning a weighted contribution from each band to overall intelligibility based on its importance for understanding speech.

AI is commonly used in environments like offices, industrial settings, and public spaces to assess and improve communication systems, particularly where clear speech is critical for effective communication.
