Introduction

Large buildings are fitted with fire safety systems, the requirement for which is established in the National Construction Code ("NCC"). These systems include building fire integrity, fire fighting systems and equipment, automatic fire detection and alarm systems and emergency warning systems. These systems exist to protect the occupants of the building from the effects of fire while saving the asset from damage.

This is not your typical behind-the-desk engineering job, you will have a lot of freedom to learn the practical aspects of fire safety in buildings.

We are looking for curious people who have had experience in working with these systems and how they operate in big buildings. The person we are looking for will help guide and support our customers to keep people and buildings safe from fire.

Job Details

At Firewize we help discerning building owners maintain the fire protection systems and equipment in their buildings. This also includes the alteration and addition to existing systems within the confines of the the National Construction Code of Australia and an array of Australian Standards.

You will join a strong established team that help our customers operate and maintain their buildings that include a wide range of building classifications including Class 3 (Residential), Class 5 (Office), Class 7 (Car Parks & Warehouses), Class 8 (Factories) and Class 9 (Hospital, Education & Healthcare).

In your day-to-day job, you will be working in cooperation with building owners, agents of owners and builders to ensure the fire protection systems and working and will continue to work reliably in the event they are required in an emergency.  This includes providing support and guidance to our in-house team of trades people and admin staff on all matters fire safety.

Skills & Experience

To be considered for the role of Fire Protection Engineer with Firewize, you will need;

  • Graduate Diploma or Masters in Fire Safety Engineering;
  • Minimum of 1 to 3 years’ experience in Fire Engineering;
  • Experience across a range of industry sectors from small to large scale projects;
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal;
  • Excellent customer and stakeholder liaison.
Duties

Our customers need to know their fire protection systems are equipment are working and are reliable.  You will need to understand the relationship between state based Legislation, Building Code and Standards and how to apply them in a practical sense.  As an experienced engineer you may have the theoretical knowledge and some practical (hands on experience) but in this role you will need to roll up your sleeves and apply your knowledge in very practical ways;

  • Interpret Codes and Standards and write material to train our team on complicated matters in simple terms;
  • Preparation of rectification briefs, performance briefs and fire safety related tender documents;
  • Help with the design or review existing designs of fire systems to ensure they comply with the relevant sections of the NCC or Standards;
  • Prepare of fee proposals and quotations (to a budget) for work to be undertaken;
  • Help with the selection and procurement of equipment and materials for project delivery;
  • Attend intermediate and final project inspections, witness testing of systems and preparation of compliance statements;
Work Location

Our office is based in Notting Hill however there will be some travel around the Melbourne metropolitan area meeting with our customers and our technicians on site.
